Ever Taken an AWE Walk?
I want to challenge you with an exercise as we begin this new year.
What are your words? Three to seven words that live at the core of who you are.
I did this a few years ago and discovered that my words show up in almost every great decision I make, every hobby I pursue, every joyful moment I experience. They're woven through everything that feels right and true. Mine are freedom, creativity, energy, impact, connection, joy, wonder, and fun.
I keep them on sticky notes where I can see them, revisiting them often enough to remember what I'm honoring when I'm living from my core.
Recently, I heard about a concept that aligns beautifully with two of my words, joy and wonder. The awe walk.
The idea is simple. Go on a walk with the intention of seeking out moments of awe. Look very intently at a gorgeous blossoming flower, the vibrancy of a sunset, a group of young children playing. These small moments that stimulate a sense of childlike wonder go way beyond physical exercise. They're psychological exercise.
Studies show that this act reduces pain and stress, increase positive emotions, and significantly improve well-being. All from simply paying attention to what's already there, waiting to fill you with wonder.
So here's my challenge: identify your words, and then find one small practice that honors them. Maybe it's an awe walk. Maybe it's something entirely different that lets you live from your core.
I hope you're having a beautiful start to this new year. I wish you many moments full of whatever your words call for.
